What to Look for in Traeger Grill Accessories

Here are some factors to keep in mind while you’re shopping for Traeger grilling accessories:

Cover the Basics

Every grill owner should have baseline tools, including a spatula, tongs and a grill brush. Pippin also recommends Traeger grill owners pick up “a cover to protect their grill from the elements, a front shelf to increase their workspace, and the StayDry Pellet Bin to store their extra pellets.”

Customize Your Experience

“Traeger’s newer models are outfitted with the P.A.L. Pop-And-Lock accessory rail that allows them to fully customize their grill based on their cooking style,” Pippin says. That means you have a ton of freedom when it comes to customization, which allows you to add (and take away) modules and accessories as you wish. It’s one of the best things about a Traeger grill, as it means you can really focus on your experience and/or try new things as you wish.

Get a Cover

We asked Pippin what he thought was the single most essential accessory anyone could buy for their Trager grill. He said, “A grill cover designed for your specific model.” And that makes sense. Your grill was an investment, and you probably want it to survive through years and years of use. One of the easiest ways to make strides toward that end is by getting a cover. It protects your grill from the elements and nosy critters.

Keep ’em Clean

As Pippin tells us, “[Traeger] accessories require little maintenance other than cleaning.” This is great because it means your accessories are largely simple to care for, aside from occasionally washing them with soap and water. However, you must at least clean them, as this will help extend their life and protect them from impurities like bacteria and carcinogens that might accrue during the cooking process.

FAQ

What is the life expectancy of a Traeger?

With the proper care and maintenance, there’s no reason to think your Traeger grill couldn’t last a decade or more. Of course, if you don’t show it proper care, it could significantly shorten its life (which is true for any grill or piece of grilling equipment).

Are Traeger grills smokers too?

Yes, because Traeger grills create wood-fueled fire, they can double as smokers, giving them much more versatility than other typical grills.

Do Traeger grills rust out?

Traeger grills feature powder-coating on the grill grates, designed to help prevent rust. Of course, that also requires the user to stick to proper maintenance. But if you’re doing your job in taking care of the grill, you shouldn’t have to worry about rust.

Should I clean my Traeger after every use?

While it’s not necessary to deep clean after every use, we recommend at least brushing the grates between uses to remove any residual food waste (like charred fat) that might harm your grill (or your next meal).

Should you empty unused pellets after using Traeger?

If you plan to use the grill again soon and the weather forecast looks dry, you can leave the pellets in the hopper between uses. However, you must protect the pellets from moisture, so if they don’t stay dry (because of summer rains, excessive humidity, etc.), we recommend removing them and storing them in an airtight container.
