How to Plan a Stress-Free Christmas Cookie Exchange, Straight from a Pro https://www.tasteofhome.com/article/how-to-plan-a-christmas-cookie-exchange/ Thu, 31 Oct 2024 22:31:42 +0000 https://www.tasteofhome.com/?p=2073257 Make your Christmas cookie party a sweet success with our party planning guide, featuring a timeline and tips from a cookie exchange expert.

The post How to Plan a Stress-Free Christmas Cookie Exchange, Straight from a Pro appeared first on Taste of Home.

]]>
As a baker, I cant imagine a more festive way to kick off December than with a Christmas cookie swap. These parties are a fantastic way to gather a variety of holiday cookies while only needing to bake a single cookie exchange recipe. Plus, they’re a wonderful excuse to spend time with family and friends. But if the added stress of party planning is holding you back from hosting your own, youve come to the right place.

I chatted with Kelsey Shepard, a cookie exchange expert, professional baker and owner of Kelsey Elizabeth Cakes, to get her top tips on hosting a successful Christmas cookie party. Kelsey has hosted cookie exchange parties since her high school days and has picked up tons of tips, tricks and ideas over the years. She’s now in her second year of hosting The Cookie Exchange, an event in Northern Ohio that brings together more than 200 bakers in a single evening. And this year, Taste of Home is a sponsor!

Below, youll find the blueprint for hosting a stress-free cookie exchange party. With proper planning and a detailed to-do list, youll be able to actually enjoy your party and maybe even have a festive Christmas cocktail or two.

How does a cookie exchange work?

How To Plan A Christmas Cookie Party, Straight From An Expert 01

A Christmas cookie exchange is exactly how it sounds: a festive event where guests bring a large batch of one type of homemade cookie to share, plus copies of the recipe. After the exchange, everyone goes home with an assortment of Christmas cookies.

When the guests arrive, Kelsey has everyone set up their cookies on a large buffet table. The first hour is for mingling, introducing people, taste-testing cookies and enjoying light bites and fizzy drinks. The second hour is for the main event: exchanging cookies! She encourages guests to go around the table with a container, grab the allotted cookie amount per person and pick up a recipe card copy.

Kelsey suggests adding to the fun with a superlative voting aspect. Have guests vote and give awards for the favorite cookie,” like the most festive or most original. The prizes don’t have to be fancy; they could be anything from bragging rights to a cute spatula or ornament!

How to Plan a Stress-Free Cookie Exchange

The key to hosting a stress-free cookie exchange is slowly chipping away at a to-do list over time. Our timeline starts one month before the party, so theres plenty of time to get everything done.

Keep in mind, you can plan any size event you like. It can be among just a few friends or a few hundred (like Kelsey’s). You can also decide to take on all of the hosting duties yourself or delegate specific tasks to other guests. For example, ask volunteers to bring drinks and light bites, or task a musically gifted friend to create the partys playlist.

Christmas Cookie Exchange Timeline

1 Month Before the Cookie Party

  • Prepare your guest list: Before you make a long list of friends, family, neighbors and co-workers, Kelsey advises you to consider your space. I like to have the cookies all on one table for aesthetic reasons, so if your table seats six, I would make the guest list no bigger than that. If you want to host more guests, set up a table nearby and make sure there is an organic flow for people to move around when it comes time to package up the cookies.
  • Set a date: The holiday season can fill up quickly, so Kelsey suggests setting a date in early December before people’s calendars become too chaotic. Keep the party around two hours, three at most, and consider hosting on a weekday evening.
  • Choose your rules: A must-have rule is how many cookies each guest should bring to the exchange. Other rules to consider are whether the cookies must be homemade and if it’s OK for guests to bring non-cookie items, like Christmas candies or chocolate bark.
  • Create and deliver the invites: Turn to evites for ease, or get crafty and send handmade invitations via snail mail. Include the date, time and RSVP due date. Let the guests know about any rules, including the number of cookies each guest should bring. Provide a space for guests to list their cookie choice, too. Kelsey likes to “be cheeky” and says, “The first one to RSVP gets to make the cookie, and any later duplicates will be asked to change, so RSVP sooner rather than later!”

3 Weeks Before the Party

How To Plan A Christmas Cookie Party, Straight From An Expert 03

  • Follow up on RSVPs: On the due date, sit down and review your guest list. Did everyone respond? Are there any cookie duplicates you overlooked? While this may seem menial, these small logistical tasks will ensure your party is a sweet success.
  • Choose your own bake: If youre unsure which cookie to make yourself, Kelsey suggests beautifully decorated sugar cookies to impress guests or a batch of peanut butter blossoms for an easier option.
  • Shop for party supplies: Now is the time to shop for non-edible party supplies, like plates, napkins, cups, silverware, festive tablecloths and cookie trays. Make sure to grab a pack of blank place cards for guests to write their cookie name on, or spread out butcher paper on the table and have guests write it right on the table, advises Kelsey. Either way, make sure everyone knows which cookies are which!
  • Buy or make gifts for any prize winners: If you plan to give awards, start thinking about prizes. This could be a baking spatula, apron, gift card, funny trophy or any practical gift for bakers.
  • Acquire cookie boxes: This step is optional, as guests can bring their own containers. However, you can go the extra mile by providing festive Christmas cookie packaging. Kelsey likes to use brown craft boxes, writing each guest’s name on their box and adding a festive finish with red and white bakers twine.

2 Weeks Before the Party

  • Create a menu: It’s always nice for guests to mingle and get to know one another over light bites and bubbly Christmas drinks. To keep it stress-free, stick to easy appetizers and no-cook dishes, like a Christmas tree charcuterie board. As far as drinks go, Kelsey suggests party punchbowl recipes. I like to have a punch ready to go and chilled as well, so guests can serve themselves all night, and Im not stuck making individual cocktails.
  • Make a shopping list: Now that your menu is set, write a grocery list. Tack it to your fridge so it’s easy to add items as you think of them. (Dont forget to include your cookies ingredients!)
  • Curate a playlist: Start thinking about the party’s mood and create a Christmas cookie exchange playlist. Not sure what to play? Christmas songs, of course! You can’t go wrong with classics like Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra, either.

2 Days Before the Party

  • Go grocery shopping: Now that you’re in the home stretch, its time to do The Big Shop. Grab your grocery list and head to the store.
  • Set up tables and chairs: Your dining table is the perfect place to set up cookies for the exchange, but you may want to move the chairs away from the table to make room. You can set them up elsewhere for extra seating.
  • Make your cookie dough: In culinary school, I learned how important it was to chill cookie dough. Letting it sit in the fridge for 24 hours gives the fats time to solidify and helps the ingredients meld together, creating cookies with the best flavor and texture.

1 Day Before the Party

  • Set up decorations: It’s time to get festive! Set up your Christmas decorations and lay down the tablecloth. Arrange the cookie trays on the table so guests can lay out their cookies once they arrive. Feel free to set out plates, napkins, cups and silverware, too.
  • Bake your cookies: I highly recommend baking your cookies the day before the party, especially if they need to be decorated. Most cookies will last for up to five days at room temperature. Store the cookies properly to keep them fresh for tomorrow.
  • Make the drinks: If youve decided to do a large-batch pitcher or bowl of punch, mix up your drinks and let them chill in the fridge. If your drink has a fizzy component, wait to add the bubbles until right before the event.
  • Prepare the food: Now is a good time to double-check that you have everything you need, as there’s still time for one final run to the store. You can also prepare any make-ahead items, like dips, skewered light bites or charcuterie boards. Tightly wrap any prepared items in storage wrap and store them in the fridge.
  • Clean, clean, clean: Spruce up any areas of the house where guests will mingle. Our holiday cleaning checklist can help to manage this often-tedious task.

Party Day!

  • Create the Christmas feeling: Light some candles, start a fire in the fireplace and turn on your Christmas cookie party playlist.
  • Set up food and drinks: About 30 minutes before the party starts, set up the appetizers and drinks in their designated area. When your guests arrive, help them set up their cookie trays. If you asked guests to bake a few extra cookies for everyone to try at the exchange, cut them up and set them out in front of each tray.
  • Mingle and graze: Introduce your guests to each other and encourage them to mingle as they enjoy the snacks. If youre voting on cookie superlatives, make sure everyone tries the cookies and casts their vote.
  • Exchange cookies: You’ve arrived at the main event! Inform everyone how many cookies they can take from each tray and give them time to build their cookie boxes.
  • Announce the winners: If you have cookie exchange superlatives, tally up the votes. Once everyone’s boxes are packed, announce the winners and hand out awards, if any.

Christmas Cookie Party FAQ

How many cookies should you bring to a holiday cookie exchange?

How To Plan A Christmas Cookie Party, Straight From An Expert 02

Every cookie exchange is a little different, so the number of cookies to bring really depends on the number of guests. Kelsey recommends planning on 10 of each cookie per person for parties with four to six guests. So, for a party with five people, each guest would bake 50 cookies. If youre hosting 7 to 10 people, you can reduce the number of cookies to five per person, so guests at a 10-person party would still only bake 50 cookies.

Remember that people will probably want to try everyone’s cookies, so encourage guests to bake a few extra so they can be cut up and sampled at the party.

What are the rules for a cookie exchange?

One of the most prominent rules for a cookie exchange is that the cookies must be homemade. Another common rule is that cookie choices must be unique. An assortment of special Christmas cookies is the secret to the best cookie platter!

Otherwise, the rules are at the discretion of the host. Sometimes, the host will specify that they only want to exchange cookiesno Christmas candy, chocolate bark or truffles. Another rule is to skip everyday cookies, like chocolate chip cookies. No matter what rules you choose, be sure that everyone brings the appropriate number of cookies so each guest goes home with an equal amount.

What is the most popular cookie at Christmas?

Some of the most popular Christmas cookie recipes are gingerbread men and decorated sugar cookies. Those can be a little time-consuming, so feel free to go with easy Christmas cookies for a stress-free holiday. If youre keen on bringing a unique cookie, take a peek at some cookies from around the world. Alfajores or Jammy Dodgers, anyone?

Lovesac SactionalsKATIE BANDURSKI/TASTE OF HOME

Best Overall Modular Sectional

Lovesac Sactional

Pros:

  • High-quality performance fabric
  • Piece-meal assembly benefits hard-to-access rooms
  • Add-on accessories available
  • Wildly customizable
  • Machine washable covers

Cons:

  • Pricey
  • Time-consuming assembly

When it comes to choosing the best modular sectional for movie nights (or simply snuggling up on), it’s important also to consider the longevity of your purchaseespecially if it’s on the pricey side. Im a big proponent of forever furniture, says Senior Shopping Editor Katie Bandurski. MeaningI want to buy quality products that last a lifetime. And after ordering, building and testing a Lovesac Sactional, Im confident this couch fits the bill.

The Lovesac Sactional is built to last and isn’t just available in your standard size and fabric choices. In fact, it’s entirely customizable, from the arm shape (standard, angled or rolled) to the backrest to the configurations. Choose from a smaller three-seat option for cozier spaces and large, M-shaped picks that seat a minimum of ten. In addition, the fabric choices range from soft boucl to luxe velvet, chenille, weave, cross weave, polyline, leather and even reversible textiles. And those are just the “quick ship” optionsin total, there are over 130 different choices.

“Ive had my Lovesac couch for about six months, and it has become a part of my personality,” says Katie. “Seriously, this is the best piece of furniture Ive ever owned. Its stylish, incredibly comfortable and easy to clean. Were hosting family in a few weeks, and I love that I can convert the modular pieces into an additional guest bed. And if they spill? No sweat. I’ve successfully cleaned coffee, tomato sauce and chocolate off the covers with no remaining stains.”

Lovesac Sactionals

One thing to remember is that, like most modular sectionals on the market, Lovesac sectionals require significant assembly. The process isnt difficult, but it is time-consuming. Katies Lovesac furniture arrived in over 20 boxes and took over six hours to assemble. At least I didnt have to worry if the couch would fit through the doorframe, though! Katie quips. The boxes ensure this couch fits even in hard-to-access spaces like a basement or upstairs media room.

Apart from the multi-box delivery, the only (slight) downside is that it shows a good amount of dirt, hair and debris. “I need to vacuum every few days to keep it in tip-top shape, but honestly, Im glad its so visible. That means I can clean it immediately; a darker fabric would hide the dirt,” says Katie. Investing in a good cordless vacuum cleaner is key to keeping your new Lovesac sofa looking like new as the years go by.

Size(s) available: 3-10 seats | Colors: Over 130 | Customizable areas: Arms, backrest, fill blend | Add-ons: Storage seat, charging hub

Alto Dining Chair

Pros:

  • Modern, minimalistic look
  • Very sturdy construction
  • Chairs hold up to 300 pounds
  • Easy to clean
  • Choice of fabric or leather

Cons:

  • Be careful not to over-tighten screws

Those hunting for the best dining chairs can’t go wrong with Burrow’s Alto dining chair. Available in several colors and finishes (including both fabric and leather), the minimalistic look and modern appeal mesh well in almost any space. These ultra-sturdy chairs work just as well for changing a lightbulb as they do sitting. Each holds up to 300 pounds. They’re sleek and elegant while still offering plenty of cushion.

One thing to remember is to use a light hand when assembling, according to Shopping Editor Mary Henn who owns the chair. “On the bottom of one of the chairs, the wood on the frame split when tightening a screw while putting on the front leg,” she says. “This could be due to user error (over tightening).” Despite that, the chair still holds up and she hasn’t noticed any other breaks or cracks after several months of use.

We Tried It Fancy Panz side by side with it empty and one with it filled with mac and cheese

We’re officially in the thick of holiday hosting season. And before you stress about the best hostess gifts or what delectable side dish to bring to your next holiday soiree, allow me to introduce you to our new favorite vessel for transporting food. It’s called Fancy Panz, and it’s our secret weapon for transporting and serving everything from hot casseroles to crisp salads and decadent desserts. Spoiler: you’ll be the talk of the party for introducing everyone to this genius solution.

What is Fancy Panz?

Complete with a hot/cold gel pack and a serving spoon, Fancy Panz is exactly what it sounds likea “fancy” upgrade to flimsy foil pans. Instead of packing your dish in a regular foil pan that’s prone to toppling over, Fancy Panz allows for a much smoother experience thanks to its sturdy and stackable design. The colorful encasing keeps the included 9×13 foil pan from spilling while doubling as stylish serveware.

The real kicker is the versatility. Whether you’re bringing a salad, creamy mac n cheese or apple crisp, the included hot/cold gel pack keeps food at an optimal temperature. Meaning, no reheating food at your destination, which is especially handy for keeping tailgate foods warm or making sure your summer charcuterie platter doesn’t melt at your Fourth of July party.

Serving and transporting a veggie and fruit tray? Simply place the gel pack in the freezer overnight. For hot casseroles, boil the gel pack in hot water for five minutes (it’s also microwave-safe). Pro tip: if you’re hosting at your house, Fancy Panz makes for easy peasy cleanup. You get the satisfaction of a stylish serving station without all the hassle.

  • Comes with serving spoon
  • Hot/cold gel pack keeps food at an optimal temperature
  • Reusable, but you’ll need a new foil pan each time
  • Several color choices available
  • Dishwasher-safe

Why I Love It

Though I love attending holiday parties, I hate that awkward moment when you want to leave, but your expensive serving dish is still out on the table. Then you have to transport food into another vessel to leave at the partyall resulting in unnecessary tasks to accomplish.

Sure, you can solve this problem by serving your meal in a disposable pan, but you end up sacrificing stylish serveware for convenience. That’s where Fancy Panz saves the day. The statement-worthy vessel not only holds a foil pan, it keeps food at the optimal temperature while serving. Plus, the foil pan easily comes out of the colorful encasing so you can leave the party without leaving your best China behind. Fancy Panz are endlessly reusable. Just pop in a new foil pan for every tailgate or holiday soiree. It’s truly a win-win.

I tested this genius pan and can confirm it does more than double duty. Flimsy 9×13 foil pans finally get an upgrade with Fancy Panz’s sturdy and stackable design that makes transporting foodie creations a breeze. Your dish will be the star of the holiday table for both taste and adorable styling.

But Don’t Take My Word for It!

We’re not the only ones obsessed with Fancy Panz. Here’s what other five-star Amazon reviewers have to say about the problem-solving serving solution.

Verified Amazon reviewer, Ellen, adds, “The gel pack is easy to heat or freeze to keep foods at the proper temperature! This is a fabulous gift for anyone, including yourself.”

“This is not my first time buying Fancy Panz and this will not be my last!” raves verified Amazon reviewer, Merrin Christenson. “They are so convenient and they’re always very popular when I bring them to a potluck or tailgating. I love how they stack on top of each other for easy transportation, and I love that they come with a hot/cold pack. This is a must-have item in every household.”

Right now, charcuterie boards are quite possibly the most satisfying, shareable snack for groupsand they can be so gosh darn cute. The jack-o’-lantern and pumpkin-shaped boards are just a few ideas in the limelight for Halloween, but we don’t dare stop there.

Hocus Pocus has become a Halloween classic, and we’re ready to bring the Sanderson sisters to (edible) life with this Hocus Pocus charcuterie board. It’s sure to put a spell on your party guests!

Hocus Pocus Charcuterie Board Ideas

We encourage individual creativity, but here are a few spooky ideas to get you started:

  • Brie rounds for the Sanderson sisters’ heads
  • Salami or pepperoni for Winifred Sanderson’s hair
  • Blackberries for Mary Sanderson’s hair
  • White cheddar cheese cubes for Sarah Sanderson’s hair
  • Various fruits, crackers and other spooky snacks to fill out the rest of the board

Psst: Here are the viral Halloween recipes we can’t get enough of.

How to Make a Hocus Pocus Charcuterie Board

Ingredients

  • 3 Brie rounds
  • Thinly-sliced salami or pepperoni
  • Blackberries
  • Cubed white cheddar
  • Sliced green apples or green grapes
  • Sliced red apples or strawberries
  • Sliced mandarins
  • Raspberries
  • Cracker rounds
  • Blueberries
  • Black olives (for eyes)

Directions

Step 1: Create the Sanderson sisters

Take your three rounds of Brie and stagger them in a triangular shape on your gorgeous Halloween-themed board. The top will be Winifred while the bottom two will be Mary and Sarah.

Step 2: Add hair

Each Sanderson sister has her own unique style, and we want to capitalize on that. For Winifred, begin by taking your salami or pepperoni and folding them to make curls. Try to alternate direction of the folds to give the meat movement and variety. Arrange the curls above her head to create her two iconic red poofs.

For Sarah, place the white cheddar cubes in a waterfall down either side of her head. Make sure to keep her hair long and leave a few cubes on the front of the Brie to represent her bangs. How is she supposed to catch unsuspecting men if her hair is out of place?

And finally, place blackberries above Mary’s head in the shape of a witch’s pointy hat. The blackberries are the perfect texture for this job, and they’re sweet to boot. Just like Mary!

Step 3: Create the sisters’ clothing

Each sister has her own color dress, and we need to mirror that. For example, place green apple slices or green grapes beneath Winifred to create her dress. Mary and Sarah both wear red-ish ensembles, so use red apple slices, strawberries or another berry for their gowns.

Step 4: Create their faces

Cut black olives and red raspberries into eyes, mouths and blushing cheeks to give each Sanderson sister her own expression and personality (like Winifred with her heart-shaped lips). You may want to use black and red licorice instead. Feel free to use whatever works best here. Creativity prevails!

Step 5: Fill in the rest

The rest of the board is your oyster. To give you some ideas, TikTok user @naughtyfork filled in her board with round wafers, blueberries, pumpkin sugar cookies, red apple slices, more cubed cheese and the most adorable brooms you’ve ever seen. Take miniature Reese’s peanut butter cups and stick a short, chocolate-covered pretzel through the top as the broomstick. But where’s the vacuum?

@naughtyfork SISTAHS! 🪄🧙🏼‍♀️ #hocuspocus #charcuterie #halloween Hocus Pocus Main Theme – John Debney

She also used cubed cheddar cheese to create the phrases “Sistas!” and “Hocus Pocus” in the corners of the board. Take your creativity to the max and add even more. Use chocolate candy, marshmallows, gummy pumpkins or other treats to fill out your board. You could even add some black cat cut-out cookies for Binx!

However you choose to dish it, we know the Sanderson sisters would wish it. Happy spooky snacking!

Fall is full of dazzling flavorsapple cider doughnuts and pumpkin spice everything come to mind. When I was a kid, there was only one treat that I wanted when the leaves started to change. It’s a sticky staple at apple orchards and farm stands… the caramel apple! Enveloped in caramel with just the right amount of tart, crisp apple, it hit my fall-lovin’ sweet spot every time. Plus, it’s an apple, so it’s healthy, right?

Now that I’m older, it’s time to take my childhood snacks to the next level. Hello, caramel apple charcuterie board.

Caramel Apple Charcuterie Board Ideas

You’ve dabbled in the Halloween boards for savory snacks, but it’s time for dessert to take center stage. Grab your caramel apple toppings (and Halloween candy) and get ready to dip apples like you’ve never dipped before.

The Taste of Home caramel apple board above includes a couple different types of apples, like Granny Smith, Honeycrisp and Gala, to name a few. You can leave some apples whole for a pop of color, but slice most of the apples, because it’s so much easier for sharing that way. The board includes caramel apple dip alongside myriad toppings for your dipping pleasure:

  • crushed nuts
  • cranberries
  • mini M&M’s
  • mini marshmallows
  • chocolate chips
  • sprinkles
  • pecans

Taste of Home finished our board with delicious extras like pretzel rods, graham crackers, popcorn balls and cream cheese fruit dip. Don’t forget the skewers!

Instagram creators have fun take on this amazing trend, too. @shopwithems integrates a slow cooker into the mix to create milk and white chocolate dips.@glambytes made everything cute and organized by sorting her caramel apple toppings into a muffin tin for easy cleanup.

Everyone has different tastes and interests, so make the caramel apple charcuterie board trend all your own.

Fun for the Whole Family

Like I mentioned above, caramel apples were a childhood fall staple for me. Use this caramel apple board board to make memories with your kiddos. Definitely ask them for fun caramel apple topping ideas! Maybe crumble up Oreos and chocolate chip cookies, to add a different texture. Slice up their favorite types of apples and add in some Halloween candy. Who says you can’t have sour gummy wormsit’s Halloween!

Keep an eye on the kids around things that are hot or sharp. You can use forks instead of skewers and serve dips that are fully cooled. And, as always, feel that fall fun!

Ina Garten’s Boozy 3-Ingredient Dessert Is Easy Elegance and We’re Obsessed https://www.tasteofhome.com/article/ina-garten-3-ingredient-dessert/ Tue, 30 May 2023 21:42:13 +0000 https://www.tasteofhome.com/?p=1890543 Is this the most sophisticated ice cream sundae ever?

Whip out the nice china sets: entertaining season is officially upon us. While any time is a good time for a dinner party, there’s something uniquely special about summer fetes. Those long golden hours and warm breezes just pair so beautifully with the abundance of fresh summer produce. But with children out of school, moves on the horizon and vacations to plan, this can also be one of the busiest times of the year. Your dinner party calls for a sophisticated menu, yes, but you also need to be able to quickly prepare dishes for a crowd. What’s an eager entertainer to do?

Fortunately, Ina Garten, the queen of store-bought shortcuts (and our hearts!), has the ideal 3-ingredient summer dessert to awe your friends without spending hours in the kitchen. It utilizesstore-bought ingredients and comes together in less than five minutes. Here’s everything you need to know about the boozy dessert, including how to make it and how to customize it to your tastes.

All About Ina Garten’s Limoncello Dessert

Ina Garten first shared her limoncello dessert with theTodayShow back in March. It utilizes store-bought vanilla ice cream, lemon liqueur and a biscotti cookie. The Barefoot Contessa describes the dessert as “fast yet impressive.” Beyond its ease, the dessert awes, thanks to its balance of flavors and textures. Garten emphasizes the richness of the ice cream, the “bright flavor” and color of the limoncello, and the “pleasant crunch” from the biscotti.

How to Make Ina Garten’s Limoncello Dessert

Dish Of Half Eaten Vanilla Ice Cream

Garten posted her official recipe here, but we have some pro tips for your preparation. First, ensure your limoncello is properly chilled before you start constructing the desserts. Then, you’ll need to find the best serving dish. While any dish will work, we love the elegance of these Nick and Nora glasses.

Now that you’ve gathered your materials, Garten suggests adding two scoops of ice cream to each glass ahead of the party. Keep the glasses with the ice cream in the freezer until you are ready to serve them. Then, pour a splash of chilled limoncello on top of each ice cream serving and stick a biscotti into the ice cream. That’s it!

How to Customize Ina Garten’s Limoncello Dessert

If you’re feeling ambitious, you can of course make your own homemade vanilla ice cream and biscotti. You can even make your own limoncello! But you can customize this dessert in many other deliciousand less time-intensiveways. As Theresa Greco suggests on Parade, you could also replace the limoncello with hazelnut or espresso liqueur. Or, for the chocoholics, try using chocolate ice cream for an extra-decadent dessert. And if you’re feeling especially adventurous, why not dress up that biscotti with a dip in melted chocolate? The sky’s the limit with this sophisticated spin on a sundae!

Best Overall

Yeti Tundra 45 Hard Cooler

Pros:

  • Best ice retention of the bunch
  • 11 sizes available
  • More leak-resistant than other options
  • Good color options
  • Bear-resistant

Cons:

  • Drain cap not attached, so it's easy to lose
  • Pricier than other options

Yeti coolers boast an existing reputation as one of the best coolers, and they ring up at a higher price point than most of the other options we tested. Because of this, we set our expectations sky-high for the Yeti Tundra 45 Hard Cooler. We’re happy to report that with an attractive look, bear-resistant build and ice retention that rivals the Arctic regions, Yeti proves its rank as the best ice cooler brand.

The Tundra cooler is available in 11 sizes, ranging from a 35-quart option that fits around 39 cans to an impressively massive 350-quart tank that can carry a whopping 353 pounds of ice. While larger sizes only come in white, Yeti offers nine eye-catching colors for the smaller options in its lineup. We snagged the 45 cooler in “rescue red,” a vibrant crimson that boasts Yeti’s “T-rex” closure: Two classic rubber pull tabs that clip into place. While this tab type isn’t our favorite, Yeti’s version by far offers the most user-friendly build of all the “T-rex” latches we tested.

This one is form and function defined. The rope handles offer just the right amount of slack, and its one-piece rotomolded construction proves its durability. Over the course of five days in a car with temperatures that teetered above 100 degrees Fahrenheit, the Yeti retained more than 15 percent of its ice by day four and measured at 54 degrees Fahrenheit on day five. Additionally, the 45 cooler fits exactly 54 cans, just as advertised.

Yeti Tundra 45 Hard Cooler

One area we’d love to see improved is the drain cap. Many of the other coolers connected theirs via wires or plastic straps, but Yeti’s isn’t attached at all. This makes it super easy to lose. Plus, if you drain it with the cap still inserted, there are only two holes through which the water comes out. Because of this, the process also takes longer than if you fully remove the cap.

When you leave the cap in, the water stops short of fully draining. If you take the cap out, the cooler drains fullysomething we found slightly annoying. However, given the incredible ice retention and high-quality build, we’re willing to excuse this small inconvenience. Plus, this was overall one of the more leak-resistant options, something we found very impressive.

“Abominable snowman? More like an indomitable snowman (ba dum tss)! The Yeti wowed us in just about every way,” says Product Testing Manager Annamarie Higley. “There’s a color option for everyone, its handles and latches were easy to use, and the ice retention was incomparably impressive.”

Sizes available (qts.): 35, 45, 65, 75, 105, 110,125, 160, 210, 250, 350 | Can capacity (for tested size): 54 | Features: Removable dry-goods basket, certified bear-resistant | Wheels: No

I Tried the Bartesian Cocktail Maker—Is It Worth the Splurge? https://www.tasteofhome.com/article/bartesian-review/ Tue, 04 Apr 2023 16:19:36 +0000 https://www.tasteofhome.com/?p=1867946 The Bartesian cocktail machine is the next best thing to having an in-house bartender at your service. Here's our honest Bartesian review.

The post I Tried the Bartesian Cocktail Maker—Is It Worth the Splurge? appeared first on Taste of Home.

]]>
As the resident bartender in my family and friend circle, I take pride in learning how to make all types of mixed drinks. Whether I’m whipping up frozen margsor sippin’ on an espresso martini, I’m always experimenting with my cocktail recipes. It’s truly only a matter of time before I turn my mixology skills into a full-fledged side hustle.

As an at-home bartender, I’ve had the oh-so-popular Bartesian cocktail maker on my radar for quite some time. Billed as the “Keurig for cocktails,” I leaped at the opportunity to put it to the ultimate test. Like everyone, I wondered, “Is it worth the price tag?”

What is the Bartesian cocktail maker?

The best way to describe the Bartesian cocktail maker is as a Keurig for mixed drinks. Just like your favorite single-serve coffee maker, it pours cocktail lounge-worthydrinks in seconds. All you have to do is provide the liquor, and no, it doesn’t matter if spirits are top or bottom shelf.

The machine holds four types of liquor at a time, which feed into the machine when it’s time for mixing. The key to Bartesian’s magic is the more than 50 cocktail capsules available. The capsules are concentrated versions of popular mixed drinks and include all the bitters and sweeteners for the perfect taste. Indulge in the classics (old-fashioned, anyone?) or take it up a notch with a blackberry margarita. Just pop in the cocktail capsule (like a K-cup!), select your drink strength and enjoy!

Not big on boozy drinks? It pours alcohol-free versions of your favorite cocktails, too! This feature alone makes it the ultimate gadget for entertaining.

Product Features

  • Premium cocktail maker with touchscreen
  • Comes with five glass liquor reservoirs
  • Includes a drip tray mat
  • Premixed drink capsules offer a high-quality tasting experience

How We Tested It

Bartesian Cocktail Maker

Upon unboxing my Bartesian machine, everything was carefully packed and arrived on my doorstep in one big box. I rinsed and dried the glass reservoirs before pouring in the liquor. The fact that the reservoirs are glass instead of plastic was a pleasant surprise. They truly add to the elegance of the gadget. The liquor bottle slots are labeled by spirit: vodka, whiskey, gin/rum and tequila. The gin slot is shared with the rum reservoir since the machine comes with five liquor bottles but only has slots for four. I filled the bottles with their respective spirits (so satisfying!), screwed on the airtight lids and inserted them into the slots. I also filled the water reservoir with fresh, filtered water and plugged in the machine after arranging it on my bar cart. Time for the first pour!

For my Bartesian review, I was very interested in testing the quality of taste for each cocktail. I received a handful of cocktail capsules to test, including an old-fashioned, blackberry margarita and a variety pack filled with pods for a lemon drop, Long Island iced tea and more. The blackberry margarita sounded delightful, so I lifted the lid to insert the capsule, selected regular strength and watched it pour over ice in my cocktail glass. Each cocktail capsule has a barcode, so when it’s added to the machine, Bartesian automatically knows what alcohol to mix with itso smart! I’m not a huge fan of super-sugary cocktails, so I was intrigued to see how the margarita tasted. Would it be too strong? Too sweet? Do the flavors taste artificial? I had so many questions.

Honestly, my first taste test was spectacular. The blackberry margarita packed a rich punch and wasn’t overly sweet. It was so smooth, and the tequila was mixed in perfectly. That’s the thing: the liquor isn’t just poured on top of the cocktail concentrate. The Bartesian machine mixes everything as it pours into the glass, so you don’t have to worry about getting a mouthful of spirits upon first sip. Considering Bartesian was created by a former bartender, I had high expectations for the drinks to not just be bar-quality but cocktail lounge-worthy. Luckily, Bartesian delivered on the taste test the first sip and beyond.

I hosted a movie night to let my friends join in on the Bartesian fun. Let me tell you, they had so much fun picking out their drink and “asking” Bartesian to mix it for them. Bonus: I didn’t have to lift a finger! It’s self-serve friendly. I no longer have to leave my home every time I crave a premium drink!

Pros

  • Mixed drinks are extremely high quality in taste
  • Not super-sugary (in a good way)
  • Holds four glass liquor reservoirs at a time
  • Drip tray catches spills
  • Choose your own drink strength (there’s a mocktail option!)
  • Fun way to experiment with new drinks
  • Over 50 cocktails available
  • Easy to assemble and clean

Cons

  • The machine’s lid is a little finicky
  • Machine is pricey, but makes a fun gift or treat if you host frequently

How to Clean the Bartesian Cocktail Maker

To keep the Bartesian magic alive, it’s paramount to keep it running smooth with frequent cleanings. After every pour, discard the cocktail capsule. The machine self-cleans after every pour, but I also like to gently wipe the capsule holder with a damp cloth after a few uses.

Every week, I clean the capsule holder and drip tray under hot, soapy water. The capsule holder is easily removablejust make sure to “pop” it up from the bottom to avoid poking yourself with the puncture needle on the inside. It’s also important to clean the water reservoir when it’s empty. I wipe the rest of the machine down with a microfiber cloth. When it comes time to refill the liquor reservoirs, I will definitely clean them with warm, soapy water before refilling.

FAQ

Is the Bartesian machine worth it?

The machine is pricey, but if you host a lot it’s a worthwhile investment. It saves precious time by pouring high-quality mixed drinks in seconds. Plus, you don’t have to worry about having endless ingredients on stock for margaritas, old-fashioneds or whiskey sours. The drink capsules offer it all.

Are the Bartesian drinks good?

The quality of Bartesian’s mixed drinks is surprising. It’s not fair to say they taste bar-quality because they’re better. The drinks are cocktail lounge-worthy and don’t taste too sugary or strong. You can also choose the drink strength if you prefer less or more alcohol.

Can you leave liquor in the Bartesian?

Yep! The glass liquor reservoirs offer an airtight seal, so spirits stay fresh for months. Plus, the reservoirs don’t leak, and liquor never evaporates.

What Other Reviewers Had to Say

I’m not the only staffer smitten with Bartesian! Several other Taste of Home editors have tried (and loved) this fun appliance.

“My Bartesian cocktail maker is such a help during dinner parties and other gatherings,” says Taste of Home Editor Caroline Stanko. “My guests can help themselves to a tasty beverage while I welcome others or finish some last-minute prep rather than play host and bartender. Plus, I really like that I can choose what brands of alcohol to use and the strength of each cocktail.”

“Ive had my Bartesian for two years, and its the talk of all of my get-togethers,” says Senior Shopping Editor Daria Smith. “Unlike other cocktail machines, each pod comes with a drink mixture, and you get to pick your favorite brand of alcohol. My go-to cocktail is a Painkiller with RumHaven Coconut Rum.”

Final Verdict

I’ve tested my Bartesian cocktail maker since February 2023. The machine’s cocktail-mixing experience is just like having an at-home bartender at my serviceminus the fact that there’s not an actual human on the other side. My favorite part, however, is the newfound confidence in experimenting with drinks I don’t usually care for. I’ve tried new tastes, like old-fashioneds and whiskey sours, which aren’t cocktails I usually go for. Still, I can trust Bartesian will mix them to perfectionand I actually enjoy them now. Plus, I have extra time to carefully garnish each drink.

The only con I’ve found with my Bartesian review is that the lid is a little hard to maneuver. Just be careful not to press down too hard when loading the cocktail capsuleit just needs a little push. If there is too much force, the capsule will puncture and leak a bit on the drip tray (but that’s what it’s there for!). All the little details, like the labeled liquor reservoirs to the touchscreen and drip tray, make this small luxury kitchen appliance an absolute dream. File it under gifts for the at-home bartender. Trust me, they’ll never get tired of experimenting with this beauty.

Where to Buy the Bartesian Cocktail Maker

Find your own cocktail maker on Bartesian’s website, Amazon, Sam’s Club or Macy’s for around $350. A box of cocktail capsules goes for $20-$25.

Still, considering the time and ingredients that go into one mixed drink, the Bartesian is well worth it in the long run if you’re a frequent host. Do yourself a favor and invest in a personal bartender (aka Bartesian cocktail machine) for an appliance worth all the oohs and aahs.

Pinwheel Mints; Easter Candy Board

Build an Easter Candy Charcuterie Board

Everyone loves a good charcuterie board. With a twist to it with the perfect Easter idea, why not hit pause on the classic meat and cheese combo and bring in the Easter candies (bunnies and marshmallow chicks, chocolate eggs and more).

To create an Easter nibble board, lay a base of paper Easter grass (skip the plastic stuff). Then add in plenty of your favorite store-bought candies as well as homemade treats like pinwheel mints, cutout cookies and candy bunny tails.

Pin the Bowtie on the Groom

Mirroring the childhood favorite of Pin the Tail on the Donkey, this activity entails blindfolding participants, spinning them around in circles, then having them attempt to accurately tack a paper bowtie to a poster of a groom. Bonus points if the poster of the groom is an actual image of the husband-to-be and not merely a stock photo.

Every year through eighth grade, my mom threw an annual, end-of-summer ice cream social for my classmates. Everyone was asked to bring an ice cream topping, while we as the hosts provided several gallons of ice cream. I usually had about 20-ish kids in my class, so you do the math: We had plenty of choices for our potluck-style ice cream sundae bar!

The ice cream sundae bar our food stylists here at Taste of Home created doesn’t have quite as many toppings, but it’s just as playful and fun. We share how to build an ice cream sundae bar that will tickle everyone’s tastebuds when the craving for ice cream strikes.

How to Make an Ice Cream Sundae Bar

Ice Cream Sundae Board

Foods to Include

Ice cream:Part of the fun of an ice cream sundae bar is getting to choose between several different kinds of ice cream. We played it safe by picking approachable, popular flavors, so that guests will be happy with the most important part of their sundae. We opted for vanilla, mint chip, strawberry and blue moon ice cream, but you can pick out the flavors you think your guests will like mostwhether it’s chocolate, rocky road or chocolate chip cookie dough.

Vessels: While you could put out regular or paper bowls with your ice cream sundae bar, we chose edible vessels for the ice cream: waffle bowls, plus sugar and waffle cones. This way, you’ll have less dishes later! If you’re feeling ambitious, you could make your own ice cream bowls with the help of a pizelle maker.

Sauces: Hot fudge sauce is a classic sundae ingredient, warm and rich on top of cold and creamy ice cream. We also made warm pecan praline sauce and blueberry sauce that can be served warm or cold, in case guests aren’t huge fans of chocolate.

Toppings: Be sure to serve classic sundae toppings like sliced bananas, peanuts and sprinkles, but don’t be afraid to branch out! Colorful candies like Sour Patch Kids and Nerds are playful and creative choices, while mini pretzels, mini peanut butter cups and Oreos are guaranteed to be a hit. Don’t forget about the whipped cream and maraschino cherry on top!

How to Build an Ice Cream Sundae Bar

Step 1: Set out the ice cream tray

On the board of your choice, set out the tray you plan to serve your ice cream inalthough you won’t take the ice cream or the ice cubes out of the freezer just yet. This way, you’ll know for sure you have space for the ice cream later (the most important part)!

Step 2: Grab your bowls and pitchers

Grab enough bowls for all of the sauces and toppings on the board, minus the bananas and the Oreos. (We used 11.) Fill smaller bowls with items like the Nerds, sprinkles, mini pretzels, mini peanut butter cups and peanuts. Save the bigger bowls for the bulkier toppings like Sour Patch Kids and maraschino cherries.

Set out pitchers for the blueberry sauce, pecan praline sauce and hot fudge for easy pouring, but hold off on filling the pitchers until later.

Step 3: Make space for the cones and waffle bowls

Nestle some waffle cones and sugar cones together, and stack the waffle bowls right next to the board. We also put out an extra bowl for more cones just in case.

Step 4: Round out the toppings with the Oreos and bananas

After all of your bowl ingredients have a spot on your ice cream sundae bar, grab the Oreos and bananas. Put the Oreos on their sides, so that you can see black and white for each cookie. When peeling the banana, try to only peel one or two strands so that you have a “boat” left to serve the slices in.

Step 5: Heat up the sauces

Heat up the hot fudge and pecan praline sauce, and the blueberry sauce if you like. Adding a spoon to the pitchers of blueberry sauce and pecan praline sauce helps give guests more control over the chunks and bigger pieces.

Step 6: Pull out the ice cream

Fill up the ice cream tray with ice cubes, and pull the pints of ice cream out of the freezer. Take the lids off of each pint and nestle each into the ice cube tray to keep them frozen for longer. Don’t forget the Reddi Whip!

Step 7: Serve

Let your guests know it’s time to dig into the ice cream sundae bar after you put out spoons and napkins. Multiple ice cream scoops would be helpful as well, so you don’t have to use the same scoop for different flavors of ice cream (if you have them)!

Tips for Making an Ice Cream Sundae Bar

Ice Cream Sundae Board

What other toppings can you put on an ice cream sundae bar?

Fresh fruit is always welcome on an ice cream sundae, and sliced strawberries and fresh blueberries are obvious go-tos. In the summer, I like to spoon some homemade strawberry jam into my sundae bowl, so that I can get a little with each bite. (Peanut butter and Nutella would also be great spreads to have with ice cream, too.) Strawberry, caramel and chocolate syrup would be great toppers as well.

Add more crunch to your ice cream sundae with Teddy Grahams, chocolate chips, M&M’s, toffee bits and cookie dough. Here are more homemade ice cream toppings and ice cream sundae ideas for you to consider.

How long can you leave ice cream out for?

With any tub of ice cream you pull from the freezer, you’ll want to let the ice cream soften a little bit before you serve it so your guests don’t struggle to scoop the ice creamso budget a little time for that. We put our ice cream pints on ice so that the ice cream won’t melt quite as quickly after that. If you skip the tub of ice, the ice cream will only last about 15 minutes before it gets too melty. Keep your eyes on the ice cream to watch how quickly it starts to meltencourage your guests to create their sundaes right away.

How can you keep hot fudge warm?

Since the ice cream will melt quickly anyway, you shouldn’t have to worry about keeping the hot fudge warm for a long time.

People Are Obsessed with Butter Candles—Here’s How to Make Them https://www.tasteofhome.com/article/butter-candles/ Wed, 14 Dec 2022 21:39:27 +0000 https://www.tasteofhome.com/?p=1834065 Butter candles have taken over TikTok and we're obsessed. Here's how to make them.

Who doesnt love butter? We love all types of butter, whether its American, Irish, salted or unsalted or even vodka! Butter just makes everything better. So it makes sense that one of the big trends of this past year has been the rise of butter boards. But recently, people have been taking things a step further, and are creating edible butter candles for their tables. 2022 is certainly the Year of the Butter!

In fact, its so trendy that butter candle videos have garnered more than 7 billion views on TikTok. Late last year, we saw the first spark of interest for butter candles, but as weve moved into the holiday season, interest has heated back up again. Why not try one for your holiday table?

Whats a Butter Candle?

A butter candle is literally a candle sculpted out of butter instead of wax. Just set it out with a big hunk of crusty bread and light the edible wick: Talk about adding a new meaning to the term melted butter!

The TikTok creator @sooziethefoodie is widely credited with posting the first step-by-step butter candle video.

@sooziethefoodie My favorite thing to make is hands down butter candles #candle #butter #nye TO THE MOON – Jnr Choi & Sam Tompkins

How Do You Make a Butter Candle?

As far as kitchen arts and crafts go, making butter candles is pretty easy. There are two approaches: Sculpting a softened stick of butter or melting butter and pouring it into a cup or cylinder to mold.

To use the sculpting approach, unwrap a stick of butter and let it soften so its malleable. Using plastic wrap, smash the butter flat and place an edible wick in the middle. Then, inside the plastic wrap, begin to roll the flattened butter into a cylindrical shape.

@spoonuniversity TikTok cant stop talking about @Eat Intelligently original sound – Spoon University

For the melt-and-mold approach, melt the butter and pour it into a cup, cylinder or another vessel that has the shape you want. As the butter cools, insert an edible wick. When its almost fully hardened, slide the candle out onto a board. Some cooks add roasted garlic to the mix for extra flavor.

Are Butter Candles Safe?

Take the same precautions you would with any lit candle. Also, always make sure you use edible wicks, usually made from hemp and food-grade beeswax.

You don’t have to work at a restaurant to serve restaurant-quality dessert at your next dinner party. All it takes is a little trick from our favorite Barefoot Contessa, Ina Garten, to wow your guests with a dessert that they will never forget.

When she’s not serving up giant Cosmopolitan cocktails or cooking up delicious mealslike her classic meatloaf or overnight mac and cheeseIna Garten is a whiz at making delicious desserts. While her old-fashioned apple crisp and her icebox cake will surely be a hit with your guests, her latest tip for serving a slice of cake is so cleverand tasty!that you will certainly wow the crowd at your next dinner party.

How to Serve a Slice of Cake Like Ina

Ready for her brilliant trick? All it takes is a slice of cake, some fresh berries and a jar of your favorite fruit jam.

Instead of just serving up a slice of cake to your guests, plate it like a chef at a restaurant! Smear some fruit jam on the bottom of the plate before placing down your slice, then garnish the cake on the side with some fresh berries.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Ina Garten (@inagarten)

In her latest Instagram reel, Ina Garten shows how she does this with her favorite Coconut Cake, made with layers of fluffy sponge cake, cream cheese frosting and shredded coconut on top.

She then takes a jar of homemade raspberry sauce (you could also use raspberry jam) and smears a spoonful on the bottom of a clean dessert plate. She then places a slice of cake sponge-side down (instead of placing the slice upright on the plate) and sprinkles some fresh raspberries on the sidewhile snacking on a few herself, of course.

So why is this trick so brilliant? Because it’s incredibly versatile! If you’re not a fan of raspberry, you could use any kind of fruit sauce or jam to your liking. Strawberry? Peach? Blueberry? It all worksand your dessert looks like it came from your favorite five-star restaurant.

While the Coconut Cake is a classic that Ina Garten loves to serve, if you’re more of a chocolate person, this trick would also look (and taste!) delicious with a slice of her Famous Chocolate Cake recipe.

Stanley Tucci’s Perfect Negroni, Plus Holiday Entertaining Tips https://www.tasteofhome.com/article/stanley-tucci-perfect-negroni/ Tue, 06 Dec 2022 17:31:59 +0000 https://www.tasteofhome.com/?p=1831373 The Stanley Tucci Negroni is now as famous as the actor himself. Learn how to make the cocktail, how to mix a perfect martini and batched drinks for a crowd, and what to serve at a party.

The post Stanley Tucci’s Perfect Negroni, Plus Holiday Entertaining Tips appeared first on Taste of Home.

]]>
Whether its the way his character Secondo makes an omelet for brother Primo in the last scene of Big Night, how he tackles family recipes and stories in The Tucci Cookbook, The Tucci Table and Taste, or eating through Italy on CNN, its clear Stanley Tucci has a passion for all things food and drink. But an early pandemic-era Instagram video of him making a Negroni pushed the award-winning actor to true culinary star status.

Now Stanley’s known as the Negroni guy, and were OK with that. Because if theres anything the world needs right now it’s Stanley Tucci being Stanley Tucci elegantly making us a cocktail.

While he stirs more than just Negronis at homehe loves a good martini, too, so much so hes known for taking a travel martini set on filming locationsStanley is a consummate host. So we asked him for a few entertainment tips for the holidays, from setting up a bar cart to mixing batches of the perfect Negroni for guests and what to serve with them.

Organize Your Bar Cart Like Stanley Tucci

The trick to a stellar bar cart is to keep it simple. It doesnt take a lot of effort, says Stanley. You can just create this little corner of elegance, which I think is the nicest thing.

First, youll need an actual cart. Luckily theres a bar cart for every style: Mid-century modern, vintage, contemporary, minimalist and farmhouse. Other necessary bar tools include a bucket or container for ice, a beaker, a shaker, a cocktail spoon and glassware.

For spirits, think about what your guests like. You’ll need a great gin for a Negroni, of course, plus a bottle of the bitter Italian aperitif Campari and a good sweet vermouth like Carpano Antica. Stanley is partial to Tanqueray No. Ten gin (he works with the brand), though any that suits your taste will do.

That same gin also makes a wonderful martini, he says, stirred with just a hint of dry vermouth (every bar cart should have a bottle of both sweet and dry vermouth) and garnished with a twist of grapefruit. A martini should be made to the taste of whoevers drinking it, he adds.

More essential tips for a well-stocked home bar: Have other basic spirits like vodka, whiskey, tequila, and a good scotch is never a bad idea. A few mixers will come in handy, bitters, and garnishes like citrus (peels, slices and wedges), pickled onions and olives, and delicious Luxardo cherries.

Make Stanley Tuccis Negroni

Whether a Negroni, martini or any other cocktail, Stanley embraces the ceremony of creating it. Its not a race; both the preparation and the drink itself are to be savored. Its almost a ritual.

A classic Negroni recipe is equal parts gin, Campari and sweet vermouth. For his version, as seen in his wildly popular video, Stanley doubles up the gin and shakes it, which had some traditionalists up in arms.

In truth, the heft of more gin cuts the sweetness a bit, but to each their own. He also serves it his own way: Most people have Negronis on the rocks, but I think theyre quite nice up, he says in the video.

Stanley Tuccis Negroni Recipe

Ingredients

2 shots gin
1 shot sweet vermouth
1 shot Campari

Directions

Fill the cocktail shaker with ice. Add gin, vermouth and Campari and shake. Pour into a coupe. Drizzle with juice from an orange slice and use it for garnish.

Make Batched Negronis for a Crowd

Theres nothing wrong with pre-made cocktails, says Stanley, especially if youre entertaining guests. A Negroni works particularly well in batches because the proportions are equal and easily bumped up. Simply combine gin, Campari and sweet vermouth in a glass pitcher or carafe, stir and keep chilled. When its time to serve, pour into individual glasses, on or off the rocks, and garnish with an orange peel.

Just make sure they stay cold, Stanley adds. Not by putting ice in the mixed cocktail, but by putting it on ice. Then you can augment the individual drinks any way you like.

Of the many Negroni variations, the Negroni Sbagliato has everyone clinking glasses right now. Thanks to the swap of Prosecco for gin, its a bubbly and festive cocktail that’s easy to make in batches. Just mix the Campari and vermouth ahead of time, and top with sparkling wine when served in individual glasses.

Food to Serve with a Negroni

We all know theres more to a cocktail party than the cocktails. When welcoming guests, Stanley likes to put out a nice charcuterie board. Maybe he’ll add a good goat cheese, a sheep’s cheese and sharp cheeses like Parmesan, which pair particularly well with the sweet and bitter balance of a Negroni. So do strongly flavored meats for a charcuterie board like soppressata, calabrese salami and chorizo. Finish with some marinated olives, plus salty nuts and bread or crisp crackers.

Keep it really simple, nothing fancy, he says. “Just use all things to really excite your palate.
